May 2013 Birchbox Overview

May 2013 Birchbox was purchased by me.  I have no special affiliation with Birchbox.

May 2013 Birchbox Overview

May’s Birchbox theme was “Beauty Diaries.”  I guess it was supposed to be along the lines of sharing secrets and great products you love, or something, but it fell short.  Really short.  Dare I say, I seriously considered cancelling after receiving May’s box.  And yeah, I know it’s June, and most people have already done their JUNE Birchbox posts,.  But for some reason, my Birchbox doesn’t ship until the 17th of the month. :/

Here’s what was in the May 2013 Birchbox:

May 2013 Birchbox

Amika Hair Mask

Amika Nourishing Hair Mask.  This says it’s for dry and damaged hair.  Well, my hair’s neither dry nor damaged.  It’s actually really healthy.  I suppose everyone can use a little extra hair love, and a deep conditioning treatment every now and then.  The 500 ml jar retails for $40, so the 20ml sample would be about $1.67.

Marvis Toothpaste Sample

Next up was the Marvis Natural Toothpaste.  I like to try new items, even if they’re only new to me, so I was kinda excited about this.  Who doesn’t brush their teeth, right?  I thought we would be getting the travel sized tubes, but no.  We {well, I at least} received a 0.5 oz (10ml) sample sized tube.  The full sized 75ml tube retails for $10.50, so the ARV of the sample would be $1.47.

Coola Sunscreen Sample

In the box was also a Coola classic sunscreen sample.  Sample size of 0.23 oz.  I’m a huge fan of Coola, so I was glad  to see this.  I’ll probably add this to my purse for when I need to re-apply sunscreen.  The full size 1.7 oz tube retails for $36, so the value on this would be $4.87.

Sumita Mini Eyeliner in Black

The last beauty related item in my box was a mini Sumita Beauty contrast eye pencil in Black.  It has a great point, a nice texture, and wears well.  These are normally sold in an assorted 4 pack for $21, so we’ll value this at $5.25.

Runa Tea Sampler

Finally, there was a 4 pack assortment of Runa tea, which is guayusa tea.  It had Ginger Citrus, Mint, Traditional, and Cinnamon Lemongrass.  I haven’t tried these yet, but the assortment sounds interesting.  Runa Tea retails for $7/16 bags.  The ARV of the 4 pack sampler would be $1.75.

That gives a grand total value of $15.01 for this month’s Birchbox.  While I only paid $10 for the subscription, it was disappointing.  Really disappointing.  There was no ooh-ahh factor, nothing to get excited over, and not really much value to the box.  We shall see how June’s box is before making a decision about cancelling.  Wanna subscribe to Birchbox?  Click here to do so!

Totally disappointing! I’ve heard so much about Birchbox and have considered getting one each month, but I’m not so sure it’s worth it? I love natural tooth paste, but if it’s only going to last a few brushes, I don’t think you can get a true feeling for how it’s going to work for you long term, especially if you are a coffee drinker like me. If you don’t want that hair masque, feel free to send it to me. My hair is extremely course and very dry, despite the fact that I take good care of it, so it could always use a little love. Shipping won’t be THAT much will it? 😉

I got my June box today, and I’m going to cancel. I’d recommend going with Ipsy, honestly.

Sorry that you were disappointed. Those sample items don’t seem to be worth the price, but I’d love the tea and the eye pencil (except I wouldn’t want black).

    What a let down 🙁

Toothpaste and tea in a beauty box. Not something I’d be excited to get 😛

Wow, I do not think that this is worth the money when they give you such small items. I guess they have to make money on the subscriptions and do not want to give out large products, but I think the items are too small.
