Sober Sips, Small Price: The Best NA Beers on a Budget

In the days after COVID-19, many people seem to be embracing the sober curious movement. Alcohol plays a significant role in American culture, but people are now much more aware of how overconsumption can impact their health. People looking to quit drinking could turn to non-alcoholic beverages to help them ease out of the habit.

Those people are in luck. There have never been more options for non-alcoholic beers. Price could be prohibitive, though, as some options are just as expensive as regular beer. Below are nine possibilities for tasty N/A beers at an affordable price.

1. Coors Edge

Founded in 1873 in Golden, Colorado, Coors is one of the oldest continuously operating breweries in America. Coors Banquet and Coors Light are both very popular, and the company also produces tasty and affordable non-alcoholic beer.

Drinkers say that Coors Edge has a very familiar taste, similar to Coors Light, with a smooth and clean finish. The company calls it a golden lager and notes hints of baked bread, grainy malts, and mild hops. Perhaps best of all, the price tag on Coors Edge is one of the lowest-cost N/A beers on the market.

2. Heineken Zero

Heineken is not only one of the most popular beers in America but also one of the most popular beers in the world. Heineken released its current non-alcoholic beer in 2017 and, as a result, got well ahead of the current non-alcoholic movement.

N/A beer drinkers are big fans of the taste of Heineken Zero, as it is considered much more full-bodied than most other N/A beers on the market. And while Heineken is generally considered more of an upscale brand, the brew sells for only around $9 for a six-pack, but may vary based on location.

3. Sierra Nevada Non-Alcoholic Trail Pass

The Sierra Nevada Brewing Company was founded in Chico, California in 1979. The iconic brewery has played a significant role in the American craft beer movement and is considered to be one of the forerunners of the craft beer boom.

The brand has several options for drinkers looking for a craft beer style brew without the alcohol. Best of all, the hoppy and piney beers come in at an affordable price of about $11 for a six-pack. Keep in mind all prices may vary by location. Sierra Nevada offers hop water style seltzers in both plain and citrus flavors. The brand also offers Trail Pass beers in IPA, Hazy IPA, Golden, and Brewveza styles.

4. Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher

Right before the rise of non-alcoholic beer, there was a boom for low-carb alcoholic seltzers like High Noon and White Claw. Lagunitas is a California brewery that has been a major player in the craft beer craze. But when the company looked to make a non-alcoholic option, it went with a seltzer-type drink.

Many fans say the flavor of their Hoppy Refresher is balanced and refreshing. It combines a bright citrusy flavor with a hoppy finish, making it feel like you’re having a drink. Not only is the Hoppy Refresher a low cost option, it’s also zero calories and contains no carbohydrates

5. Penn’s Best

The Genesee Brewing Company, founded in 1847 in Rochester, New York, is well known for its lager and cream ale. The brewery also makes a non-alcoholic beer called Penn’s Best and according to enthusiasts, it’s not only one of the best, but also one of the cheapest N/A beers on the market. In most locations, six-packs sell for as little as $4.

Genesee traditionally produces its non-alcoholic beer with malt, yeast and hops. Thanks to those ingredients, the brew tastes almost like a regular beer and has no rough aftertaste.

6. Stella Artois 0.0

Brewed for the first time in 1926, but with brewery traditions that go back 600 years, Stella Artois is one of the most popular beers in the world. The Belgian pilsner was first introduced as a Christmastime beer, but it was so popular that the brand chose to release it year-round.

Stella entered the non-alcoholic market with a beer they brand as 0.0 and also call Liberte, symbolizing freedom from alcohol. And while Stella is traditionally considered to be a higher end beer, the price for their non alcoholic option is competitive at about $9.50 for a six-pack.

7. Asahi

Japan loves its beer, and its two most recognizable beers are Sapporo and Asahi. Both brands have jumped into the non-alcoholic beer craze with options of their own. The price for a six-pack is around the same $10 price point, so shoppers will have to decide which one they prefer.

Asahi is famous for being an especially dry beer, and the company has also incorporated this characteristic into their non-alcoholic offering, and are calling the beverage Asahi Non-Alcoholic Super Dry 0.0.

8. Michelob Ultra Zero

Michelob was a popular beer in the 1970s and 1980s, but saw a decline in sales in the 1990s. The brewery, a part of Anheuser-Busch, had a winner on their hands when they released low-carbohydrate beer, Michelob Ultra in 2002.

As many of the same people who wanted a low-carb beer now want a no-alcohol beer, Michelob was smart to step up to the plate with a non-alcoholic version of their popular Michelob Ultra. Michelob Ultra Zero was the result. It currently sells for a price point of around $17 for a twelve-pack of cans, dependent upon location.

9. O’Douls

Long before there were health-conscious or sober-curious movements, O’Douls sat as one of the only non-alcoholic beers on the shelf. Created by Anheuser-Busch and released in 1990, O’Douls is one of the earliest mainstream N/A beers distributed nationally.

Since its inception, O’Douls has been criticized for its taste, but that hasn’t stopped the brand from developing quite a fan base, especially with a price tag on a six-pack coming in as low as around $8 in most locations. The brand has managed to maintain its popularity even after so many new options have been added to the marketplace.
