General Motors has been an automotive giant for decades, and now it’s making a move that could win over the hearts of many Americans. After Trump introduced harsh tariffs on imported vehicles manufactured in different countries, GM knew that it had to pivot hard.
To get around these tariffs, GM is redirecting a $4 billion investment from Mexico over the border and back into the hands of Americans.
A Radical Shift
Many automotive brands set up their manufacturing facilities in foreign countries due to cheaper materials and labor. This means that vehicles are more cost-effective and can reach the domestic market at the most competitive price.
However, Trump’s trade policies have made it clear that companies that rely on foreign investment are going to suffer, and GM wants to skirt around this by moving production to U.S. soil. Their hand has been forced by government policy, but this is a good thing for many Americans.

GM is taking the $4 billion investment and moving the funds into important U.S. plants. These are Michigan’s Orion Assembly, Kansas’ Fairfax Assembly, and Tennessee’s Spring Hill Manufacturing.
With a sudden injection of substantial capital, these facilities will be able to increase production on the cars that Americans love most, including pickups, SUVs, as well as gas and electric cars. This investment into domestic production means GM will be able to build over two million cars annually.
Which Vehicles Will Be Affected?
GM has been building many models exclusively in Mexico before shipping them up to America. This includes popular models like the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox, which, for the first time in ages, will be purely American. The Equinox should see domestic production starting in 2027 by all three U.S. facilities.
Later this year, Fairfax Assembly in Kansas will start building the Chevrolet Bolt EV and plans to produce more affordable EVs in the future. Orion Assembly will take on the production of SUVs and light-duty trucks.
How Jobs Will Be Affected
While some companies have been pulling out of domestic production and moving shops overseas, displacing thousands of workers, GM is doing the opposite.
The three plants on U.S. soil will ramp up production significantly, meaning that more jobs will need to be filled, boosting the economy and job security of Michigan, Tennessee, and Kansas.
Impact On Mexico
While it may seem like GM is cutting its ties to Mexico, it isn’t pulling production from the country entirely. While the $4 billion investment is being redirected into U.S. plants, the Mexican facilities will not close down and continue to produce GM vehicles.
However, with more popular models being pulled from production in the country, Mexico’s auto sector could suffer.

The company knows where its biggest demand lies, and its still with gas guzzling SUVs and trucks. Focusing on its strengths should bring a big pay off, but the company isn’t entirely giving up on EVs either.
Detroit’s Factory ZERO plant will continue to produce EVs for the American market. With demand decreasing, GM is hedging its bets and doesn’t see it surpassing what one plant can build.
