Costco has long stood as a figure of American shopping culture. Millions of consumers walk through Costco’s doors every year, drawn in by their mix of quality goods at affordable prices. As many shoppers rely on the retail giant for all of their basic needs and more, they may be hit with an unexpected sight.

This May will see Costco close their doors for one day, which could inconvenience shoppers and potentially lead customers to other stores. Don’t worry though, they will only be closing for one important holiday, but the question is, why?

A Continuity Of Tradition

Costco seeks to follow its tradition of closing all of its locations for important holidays, giving employees a chance to see their loved ones and celebrate and rememeber important historical moments and ultimately take the breather that they deserve. They have historically closed on important days like Labor Day and Thanksgiving, but their tradition doesn’t end there.

This year, over 600 stores will be closed, from busy urban locations to their suburban branches. Shoppers who like to do their shopping during holidays will be affected, as they stores won’t be open to them, meaning that many may have to change their holiday shopping plans.

An Opportunity To Rest

The retail sector is an ever-moving piece of American industry that never truly sleeps. To stay efficient, most retail stores hire enough staff to take shifts and ensure that they are open seven days a week, often leading to burnout or the feeling of being overworked.

This is all for the benefit of consumers who can choose to go to a retail store virtually whenever they want. On Memorial Day, however, Costco will have an opportunity to rest as every location across the country closes for the holiday. This has implications for everyday groceries and their fashion departments.

Closing For Memorial Day

Costco has announced that it will be closing every single U.S. store on May 26, 2025, for Memorial Day. While other competitors may stay open, Costco would rather look towards a tradition it has upheld for many years and use it as an opportunity for rest before opening again just a day later.

These family-oriented values could be part of what has made Costco such a large and popular company. With the stores being closed for a full day, consumers on Memorial Day may see that they are closed, and will look to other shops to spend their money, ultimately losing Costco revenue.

A Significant Holiday

Memorial Day is a holiday to remember the sacrifices that many American soldiers made for the benefit of their country. The day originated in the 1800s as Decoration Day, but evolved over time into the important holiday about reflection and sacrifice that we have today.

Costco seemingly understands just how significant this day holds in American history, and would rather honor it than push the retail envelope by keeping its doors and source of revenue open for one more day out of the year.

Employee Benefit

Costco employs hundreds of thousands of employees across the United States. Closing their doors for just one day will have an enormous impact on their employees’ mental health and morale as they get to enjoy a full day of time off with their families, with pay.

Retail is often known for its mistreatment of employees, working long hours for little compensation, but Costco’s move should be a model for other businesses to give a little back and honor important American holidays that embody sacrifice and commemoration. This investment in employee loyalty could increase overall productivity and foster a better brand image.

Changing Customer Habits

By announcing that they will be closed on Memorial Day ahead of time, Costco can keep as much revenue as possible by avoiding incidents of consumers heading to alternative stores on May 26, and incentivizes Costco members to do all their shopping for Memorial Day essentials before the day. Consumers rushing to the store and stocking up in advance could even potentially boost sales temporarily.

With Memorial Day being on a Monday this year, the weekend before is looking to be a particularly busy one. For consumers who don’t like crowded shopping experiences, it would be advised to do all essential shopping this week, before the exceptionally busy Saturday and Sunday.

A Big Day For Fashion

Historically, Memorial Day weekend has been a large day for fashion, as clothing sales events offer large discounts. Brands like J.Crew, Abercrombie & Fitch, Madewell, Lululemon, and others often participate in Memorial Day sales.

Consumers will rush to stores the weekend before Memorial Day to buy clothing on sale, but many might want to visit stores on Memorial Day when they have the day off to look at apparel discounts. Costco being closed at this time means that there might be a significant impact on these sales, with customers looking to other stores to buy their warm-weather essentials at discounted prices.

A Win For Other Retailers?

Despite Costco seeing a sales boost the weekend before Memorial Day, they will make no revenue on May 26, giving the opportunity for smaller businesses that stay open to see increased foot traffic. This win could be seen at Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Publix, Whole Foods, Kroger, and other retailers that maintain full or limited holiday hours while customers seek nearby alternatives.

The tradition of closing its doors and giving its employees a break to honor a holiday could become a broader trend in retailers as Costco maintains a foothold in the market while setting precedents for other businesses.

Retail Holidays In The Future

Consumers will always need a place to look to on holidays when major retailers like Costco have closed their doors. However, the important question is whether the trend will catch on, or if it’s necessary for there to be a place to shop for consumers 24/7, twelve months a year.

There are proven benefits to Costco’s store model, and while many praise their actions, the future of retail holidays is up in the air as corporations always look to increase profit margins.
