19 Companies That Have Laid Off Thousands This Year

2025 has witnessed a significant number of layoffs across various companies in the United States. This widespread restructuring represents a trend of companies reorganizing management, with some investing in AI and digital transformation to keep pace in a fast-changing global economy.

We have put together a list of 19 companies that have laid off thousands of employees this year:

1. Microsoft

Microsoft recently announced the layoff of about 6,000 employees. They’re laying off employees as part of the restructuring they’re doing in order to focus on engineering talent. They mainly want to invest aggressively in artificial intelligence, as it now makes up to 30% of the code in a lot of projects.

2. Walmart

Walmart is eliminating approximately 1,500 corporate positions in the U.S. The company plans to downsize its global technology operations, U.S. store e-commerce support, and Walmart Connect, its advertising business. The layoffs will enable Walmart to lower costs and become more agile in its decision-making in an increasingly complex retail environment.

3. Meta Platforms

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has reduced its workforce by approximately 5%.  The cuts are part of its ongoing restructuring and refocusing of its business against the backdrop of economic pressures and changes brought about by AI. Meta also indicated that part of this was to get rid of low performers as part of their restructuring.

4. Luminar Technologies

After its founder and CEO, Austin Russell, resigned out of nowhere, Luminar Technologies has started the process of layoffs, with a $4 to 5 million restructuring plan. The exact number of impacted employees wasn’t revealed, but it’s symptomatic of difficulties in the lidar tech space.

5.  Match Group

YouTube – Business Breakdowns

Match Group, the parent company of dating apps like Tinder and Match.com, has cut a substantial number of staff in 2025. The company is reorganizing to better fit the modern digital dating world.

6. Block Inc.

Block announced that it would lay off approximately 8% of its workforce. The firm is also working on “rationalizing operations” and becoming more efficient in two key areas: financial services and digital payments.

7. Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley has implemented layoffs as part of its efforts to adjust to market conditions and optimize its operations. The financial services firm decided to focus on strategic areas to maintain competitiveness. 

8. Wayfair

Reddit – u/Suspicious-Bad4703

Wayfair, an online furniture seller, announced some layoffs last January, which consisted mainly of its tech employees. They believe that these cuts will improve the efficiency of operations, and improve the customer experience.

9. United Parcel Service (UPS)

UPS recently announced job cuts affecting around 20,000 of its employees. Additionally, the company plans to close approximately 73 stores and reduce the total hours of its operations. These changes are meant to meet the needs of shifting delivery patterns and increased use of technology.

10. Coty Inc.

YouTube – New York Stock Exchange

The beauty company Coty Inc. is reforming its business and cutting approximately 700 jobs as part of the restructuring. Their goal is to focus on core brands and enable simplicity in their operations to drive future growth. 

11. Adidas

YouTube – Nanci Hogenboom

Adidas is laying off 500 jobs to simplify its business. These layoffs are to realign the company with new strategic objectives and achievable market conditions.  Their strategic purpose is to prioritize innovation and capitalize on emerging digital opportunities.

12. Starbucks

Reddit – u/crabcakes110

Starbucks has recently announced layoffs of 100 corporate employees as the company plans to reconstruct to more streamlined operations. They’re trying to optimize productivity and improve the consumer experience at the same time. These layoffs, however, should not affect their cafes.

13. Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is laying off 1,750 employees due to changes in the airline industry, with current demand and operational fluctuations. These changes are so that they can focus on staying above board financially in order to maintain the quality of service to customers.

14. Intel

Intel announced it would lay off 21,000 employees as part of a massive restructuring effort to refocus the company on engineering and innovation. Their current need to reduce their headcount is intended to help the company refocus after facing losses, declining sales, and pressure from competitors in the competitive AI environment.

15. Tesla

In 2024, Tesla laid off roughly 6,020 jobs as part of an overall job reduction. Sales declines from increased competition, the introduction of an older electric vehicle lineup, and operational inefficiencies resulted in job reductions. The cuts hurt jobs primarily in manufacturing, engineering, and Tesla’s Supercharging team.

16. PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers)

PwC has laid off around 1,500 employees of their 75,000-person workforce, who are mostly in its audit and tax teams. These layoffs were driven by incredibly low staff attrition rates, decreased demand for consulting work, and a weaker M&A market, resulting in a reduction in headcount.

17. Amazon

In May 2025, Amazon laid off 100 employees in Devices and Servicing to help make their operation more efficient and improve and coordinate product goals for its brands: Alexa, Kindle, and Zoox. The company, however, is continuing to funnel money into AI developments and is still hiring for substantial roles across the division.

18. Joann Fabrics

Reddit – u/toprailfull

Joann Fabrics has declared bankruptcy twice between 2024 and early 2025 due to excessive debt and decreasing sales, which has required them to close roughly 500 stores nationwide. Joann is currently liquidating all stores, and they were expected to close down their remaining stores by the end of May 2025.

19. Siemens

Siemens has recently outlined plans to cut roughly 5,600 jobs across Digital Industries, which has around 68,000 employees worldwide. This works out to be about 8% of the division’s workforce and the largest amount of job cuts since 2017. Their target is to boost future competitiveness and enable Siemens to reinvest in the growth market.
